We cut the stems pushing inwards, the ones that are weak, badly located, too close together, interfering or in excess. In the case where some stems exceed the natural habit of the shrub, we shorten them. Also, if your shrub is grafted on stem, we eliminate the rejects and greedy which are born under the point of graft. Finally, if you have a variegated shrub, we make sure to remove the stems with green leaves. These stems are vigorous and can become dominant quickly.
