Over time, grass particles die and accumulate on the soil surface. This is called stubble. A small amount of thatch can be helpful though since it is an organic matter that is degraded by soil microbes. But sometimes, the stubble can accumulate too quickly to allow a natural degradation. The stubble then forms a barrier, which prevents moisture and air from reaching where the grass needs it. A 1.25 cm (0.5 in) thickness of thatch or more can weaken your lawn. Stubble removal removes excess stubble that could be harmful to your lawn. Then, aeration creates a doorway for the moisture and air that grass needs.
